The J.D. Power 2018 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM revealed that vehicle quality is only getting better by the year, with Vice President of Global Automotive Dave Sargent saying, “There’s no question that most automakers are doing a great job of listening to consumers and are producing vehicle quality of the highest caliber.” Doing a finer job by far is the Ford Motor Company, which earned its highest ever score and received the most awards for individual models out of any automaker in the industry.
J.D. Power’s IQS ranks vehicles based on the number of problems reported per 100 vehicles within the first 90 days of ownership (PP100). The Ford brand scored 81 PP100, easily besting the industry average of 93 PP100 and putting it well ahead of rival Detroit brands. This was also better than Ford’s 2017 score of 86 PP100, demonstrating the Blue Oval’s commitment to continued improvement year-over-year.
“Customers want a vehicle that keeps them connected whether they’re going places or just out enjoying a drive,” says Ford Director of Quality for The Americas Jim VanSlambrouck. “Our improving quality scores show we are delivering smart vehicles for a smart world that are also easy to use.”
Ford scored four out of five for overall quality and pulled down a perfect score for features and accessories design quality. At an individual level, the Ford Mustang ranked highest among sports cars, the Ford Super Duty ranked highest among heavy-duty trucks, and the all-new Ford Expedition ranked highest among full-size SUVs.
J.D. Power found that driver-assistance systems problems increased around 20 percent in 2018 at 3.5 PP100 for the industry on the whole. Ford is looking to establish itself as the industry’s foremost name in driver-assist safety technology with Ford Co-Pilot360™, which will make cutting-edge features like Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert, and Lane Keeping System standard for vehicles like the 2019 Ford Fusion and 2019 Ford Edge.
