Peoria saw a boom in population thanks to the railroad depot located in the city. Largely responsible for turning the city into what it is today, the railroad depot was sold to the city of Scottsdale in 1972. In 1954, Peoria was home to nearly 2,000 residents. Following World War II and the presence of Luke Air Force Base, the city’s population grew significantly, jumping from 12,351 in 1980 to more than 50,000 in 1990.
Today, the city is home to many attractions that revolve around art and culture, like the Arizona Broadway Theater and Musical Instrument Museum. Visitors who want something more active can check out the many hiking trails. Lake Pleasant Regional Park spans more than 10,000 acres and includes two marinas as well as gliding lessons and archeological sites.
